Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor

An ambulatory blood pressure monitor is a continuous recording of the patient’s blood pressure for a period of 24 hours. While the monitor is worn it is important that you continue with your usual daily activities.

The doctor may use this test to:-

i. Decide if you require blood pressure medication

ii. To adjust the type or dose of blood pressure medication you are already taking

It may help explain symptoms of dizziness, blackouts or headaches.

The test is also used to rule out a condition called “White Coat Hypertension” - this is when a patient’s blood pressure rises when they visit a doctor but appears normal at other times.

How is the test performed?

A blood pressure cuff is placed on the patient’s arm. This is attached to a small monitor box which can be carried in a pouch around the waist or over the shoulder. The recorder is worn for 24 hours and you are encouraged to continue your daily activities. Please record in a diary activity and/or symptoms. After 24 hours, the blood pressure monitor needs to be returned to The Cardio Clinic and is removed by the Clinical Physiologist.
